knowbuddy: Rubik's Clock?

So it's similar in concept to a Rubik's Clock, then? I had one back in 1994 and a friend took it home for a weekend, only to return on Monday with not only a solved puzzle but a mathematical algorithm for solving it from any point. On top of that, he had handwritten then source code to a program for the TI-8x-series calculator to do the algorithm.

The Rubik's Clock is completely linear, while this puzzle is almost completely linear. There are some notable mechanical similarities as well, although the fundamental principle behind how you differentiate between available moves is very different in this one.
